Purses and Party Favors

So what has Dawn been up to these days, you ask?  Well, you know I always have a million projects going on at once and many of them never make it to the blog.  However, I decided to show you two of my completed projects that I am most proud of at the moment.  One of them is a sewing project — another purse — or I suppose I should have called it a very large tote bag.  It turned out much larger than I anticipated.  It is “growing” on me.  I wasn’t sure about the color combinations on it, or the size, or the difficulty of the pattern, or anything………I was just glad to have it FINISHED!  It took longer than I expected and the pattern was not nearly as easy as the last ones I did.  That was a little discouraging to me since my time is so rushed these days (and all days!).  It just didn’t flow together as easily as I had planned and I really didn’t think I liked the design at all.  I was about to decide to give it away as a gift, but now I think I like it after all!  I have saved all the others I have made this summer, but I think I am going to claim this one!  And NO, I don’t think I will make another one.  Please don’t place your order………ha!

Here is the finished tote bag.  It is made using “Charms” — which are pre-cut 5″ squares of many coordinating fabrics from the same grouping of material.  Kind of like our Designer Paper………different patterns, but all in the same package!

This is the bottom of the tote.  The directions said to quilt it and recommending a “meandering” stitch of which I have no clue how to do.  Yes, there is something Dawn does NOT know how to do.  I thought it would be cute to “quilt” the circles for the polka dots.  It was a little easier said than done, but I did it and it turned out OK……….remember it is the BOTTOM of the bag!  Hardly anyone will see it.  And about the “meandering” — they are offering a class on July 25 but we will be in Colorado……..oh, well, I will have to take that class another time!  Vacation is sounding so nice right now!!!

Thought I’d zoom in on the button details………I like this part alot.  These were some unique buttons I found at JoAnn’s and I thought they looked nice.  I had to be careful because so many of the buttons I liked in the brown color were not washable………not good for this type of bag!  I know it will need a washing every now and then.

This last shot shows the inside of the bag.  I didn’t want the raw seams to show on the side seams so I took some coordinating fabric and sewed a bias strip down each side.  The other little detail that “bugged” me was that the polka dots that I quilted on the bottom of the bag did not match up to the polka dots on the inside.  You can see this flaw really nicely on this picture.  Guess I would have had to use a different fabric on the inside to avoid this mistake.  Oh, well……..you live and learn!!!

Sarah’s Birthday Treats

Sarah’s Birthday is Saturday……she will be 12!  She is having a swimming party tomorrow night and her theme is ZEBRA print and hot pink.  She is on a wild streak right now — everything has to be zebra print and bright, bright colors.  So, here are the treat bags we came up with.  They include Zebra Cakes (courtesy of Little Debbie), zebra tissues (Hobby Lobby), a zebra notepad (Stampin’ Up! embellishments), a zebra pen, and some candy.  Our new Melon Mambo ribbon matched her party supplies just perfectly!
